Book Review
The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd
I tried to get into this novel. I tried to get caught up in the atmosphere of this Victorian horror story but I just couldn't. Not everything about this book was bad but there was a lot I didn't like, starting with long periods of slow, boring plot points. This book intrigued me, the idea of this book is really interesting but the execution left something to be desired. The book is set up well, the beginning is fantastic it's creepy and well written and it grabs the reader's attention drawing them in and then it Juliet and Montgomery get on a boat and the story takes a nose dive. The main focus of this book was the romance a love triangle actually, when the emphasis should have been on the gothic thriller aspect. The love interests were presented in the standard gentleman vs. wild boy. What annoyed me the most was that the romance aspect wasn't even interesting or original. Juliet flipped back and forth between Montgomery and Edward so quickly it could give you whiplash. In this plot a focus on romance doesn't fit and that's what's truly disappointing. Although the middle moved slowly there was a powerful cliffhanger ending that gives promise the second book will be amazing. But after forcing myself to finish this book I don't intend to read the next book.
A.B.
