Book Recommendation
The Infernal Devices
Some say Cassandra Clare's best work is The Mortal Instruments Series but I have to say my favorite has to be The Infernal Devices. The series takes place in Victorian England, a short time after the peace treaties between Downworlders and Shadowhunters. As Shadowhunters consider themselves superior or purer than Downworlers or demons, they may have no qualms about killing either. The series follows Tessa Gray an orphaned teenage girl who discovers she has the power to shapeshift, but doesn't bear a mark that shows she is a warlock, abilities that plunge her into a world she never knew existed and she will have to learn to master them if she wants to find her brother Nate. To do this, she will have to forge an alliance with Shadowhunters if she wants to survive in this dangerous world. In the story Tess meets and befriends Shadowhunters Will Herondale, and Jem Carstairs who help her navigate the world of Demons, Downworlders, and Shadowhunters as well as inbrance who she truly is.
I read The Mortal Instrument series first but I enjoyed this series even more. First I love the Victorian aria which helps my love of these books grow. An important part of the series is woman being as useful if not more so then men. The series is also about finding your way through a world you don't really know anything about which is kind of where everyone is when they grow up. Your navigating through a place where you don't know all the answers too when before you had a system and pattern and you knew what to expect. The books can be hard to read in short amounts of time because Clare put so much detail into them, but that's what makes her books and this world of Shadowhunters she created so fantastic.
SPOILER AHEAD: A really cool thing is Clare connects her stories together yes this series is years before The Mortal Instruments but characters overlap and I heard that in her upcoming book City of Heavenly Light (which I'm super excited for) even more overlapping occurs. These books are well written, extremely detailed and gripping. I laughed and cried and was shocked about events that occurred throughout the series. The Infernal Devices is a series I enjoy reading more than once if not just because every time you read them you'll notice something new.
A.B.
